IMDb Top 250 Journey: Guardians of the Galaxy

Hello and welcome to Friday night here at the Tony Tay, where we review movies which IMDb users claim, are the best on the planet. This week we're down to Guardians of the Galaxy, which sits at #213 and has a score of 8.0. Shall we? We shall.

Immediate thoughts?

Fun. Fun. FUN. Also, visually striking.

Go on...

Truth be told, I could end this review with my immediate thoughts, and it would accurately reflect my views, but alas, I said I was going to review movies so ... Guardians of the Galaxy is the blockbuster done right; Exciting, adventurous, with heroes you can't help but love, and of course, eye-popping visuals.

It was advertised as a movie from the studio which brought you avengers, which should hopefully show you how uncertain Marvel was about it. Or more accurately, how uncertain it was about what public reaction would be. This was mostly because it featured little known superheroes, and brought the impression that Marvel was bringing in filler content to keep people happy in-between avengers sequels. Well, I hate to say it but, score one for them, because they knocked it outta the park; Guardians of the Galaxy is about as entertaining as movies can get.

As it turns out, the little known superheroes I spoke about earlier were easily the best thing about the movie; They were fun to watch, especially as a group, and they looked like they were enjoying themselves too. Bautista (yeah that WWE wrestler), as Drax was particularly impressive, giving a thoroughly perfect performance. I don't quite know about Gamorra though. She wasn't bad, but everyone else was so good, it seemed like she wasn't given much thought. I blame whomever wrote her character. In fact, with the exception of the four main characters, and one guy (the blue dude who whistles), everyone else seemed ...generic. Or utterly forgettable. Even the villain; He might as well have not existed. And I bet you'd probably have had the same amount of fun watching the guardians going on adventures and beating mindless bad guys, as much as this villain. Hell, maybe even more fun.

But was it well-made?

Yeah, Guardians of the Galaxy managed to stand out thanks to some neat decisions here and there. The soundtrack particularly comes to mind, but the bright, colorful aesthetic was also great to see. And it would seem we have director James Gunn to thank for that - He managed to infuse what could have been a mindless blockbuster with wit, groove and all round awesomeness. The visuals too are top of the line, not surprisingly, as movie studios always pump money into blockbusters. I'll give kudos to Gunn for giving it flavor, and to everyone responsible for the look, and presumably Marvel for making the movie fun.

Final thoughts

Hope you've enjoyed my blow-up of a single line into an entire review - It wasn't easy. But yeah, Guardians of the Galaxy is about as fun as one can hope, which is to say it's more difficult to come out not having enjoyed yourself than otherwise. So yes, definitely, it deserves a spot - at its current position - on the list. Buckets of fun, lovable characters, and all the good aspects of the blockbuster are enough to agree with that.

My Score: 7+

Next week we're on to Wild Tales, which is the first international movie we've come across. That should be good a one. And yes, feel free to go on about Guardians of the Galaxy in the comments.
